Sony announced, it will soon release two new memory sticks for the PSP portable gaming system. The sticks will be available in two different versions: 1 GB ($60) and 2 GB ($100). They will be labeled as “Sony Memory Stick Entertainment Pack”. The good thing about these is, they will contain a movie on the stick right out of the box. You can choose between movies like “S.W.A.T.”, “Hitch” or “The Grudge”.

It will be interesting to see, if this decision is going to be the end of UMD movies, which saw very poor sales lately.

In my opinion, UMD movies had to fail, because their pricing is unreasonable. You can watch UMDs only on your PSP, yet you still have to pay about as much as for the DVD version. While owning the DVD, you can of course watch it on any TV with a dvd player, but you can also easily convert it with a few tools into a format that enables you to watch the movie on your PSP. So there’s really no reason to buy a UMD.

Since the PlayStation Portable’s release in September 2005, there are three groups in conflict. Thanks to savvy hackers and programmers, the first firmwares were hacked and every “poor” PSP owner could download games without paying for it. The other group, denies all of these accusations and sticks to the “Homebrew”-scene, which means they only use hacked firmwares for home-made software. Sony and a few others stick to defending legal software and boycott the hacker and home-made software scene.

The newest firmware (version 2.7) hasn’t been hacked yet and was able to provide some level of confidence to Sony and the system’s game publishers. Until now. There’s a new kid on the block, which would let homebrew fans and poor gamers win.

The so-called “Undiluted Platinum” PSP Mod Chip is supposed to enable its users, to run different firmware versions in parallel. This would mean PSP owners could switch back and forth between different firmware versions. This is important because newer PSP games demand newer PSP firmware versions. As already mentioned before, the newest firmware 2.7 hasn’t been hacked yet, but the great majority of games need version 2.6 or less, which have all been successfully altered to allow playing downloaded version of the internet.

Wether the still unannounced release date of this mod chip is going to be the PSP’s day of death, or if it increases sales just like it did for the PS2, remains to be seen.

I have had a PSP for a while now and I have to say, it’s amazing. My favourite PSP game at the moment is of course GTA Liberty City Stories. The graphics, the story and also the missions are unbelievable for a handheld, even when compared to its PS2 counterpart. Anyway, I wanted to go online with my PSP for a while now. I wanted to download PSP specific stuff (like game goodies – WipeOut Pure has tons of them), but also to be able to check my e-mails and some websites spontaneously without having to turn on any of my PCs. So, I naturally tried to connect my PSP via my own Netgear WPN802 Access Point. But to my disappointment, I had to disable some of its security settings and other stuff, otherwise it would not connect, because the PSP didn’t support WPA. This has changed with the arrival of firmware 2.6, with other great features. The current firmware version btw. is 2.7. Being able to use WPA, I still had to disable 802.11g support and thus using 802.11b only mode. I didn’t wanna stick with this, since I have a laptop using the g standard and I occasionally stream videos to it, so going with 802.11b only was not an option. So I played with some of the settings avaible in the access point menu and it suddenly worked! The setting that seemed to cause problems was the “enable eXtended Range(XR) Feature”. Since I don’t have any devices using this, I disabled it and voilà! The whole thing worked perfectly, while still providing security and not broadcasting the SSID.

Should you still encounter problems with, drop me a comment or contact Netgear’s Support.

Here are 2 pics to show where exactly the settings are located at:
