Memory sticks to include Movies – the end of the UMD?
Published on July 14th, 2006 in PSP
Sony announced, it will soon release two new memory sticks for the PSP portable gaming system. The sticks will be available in two different versions: 1 GB ($60) and 2 GB ($100). They will be labeled as “Sony Memory Stick Entertainment Pack”. The good thing about these is, they will contain a movie on the stick right out of the box. You can choose between movies like “S.W.A.T.”, “Hitch” or “The Grudge”.
It will be interesting to see, if this decision is going to be the end of UMD movies, which saw very poor sales lately.
In my opinion, UMD movies had to fail, because their pricing is unreasonable. You can watch UMDs only on your PSP, yet you still have to pay about as much as for the DVD version. While owning the DVD, you can of course watch it on any TV with a dvd player, but you can also easily convert it with a few tools into a format that enables you to watch the movie on your PSP. So there’s really no reason to buy a UMD.
