Taking a closer look at designing a website

Picture:Clock Published on June 29th, 2006 in Best of, CSS, Fun

I found this on the net, hilarious, but oh so true. Don’t you think IE users should switch just to make the lives of many web designers (including me) a lot easier? We’ll see how IE7 handles CSS.

This is actually true. I think there should be something along the lines of bashing the keyboard, or hitting the monitor in there somewhere.

Why is it so difficult to make a website compatible in FF and IE, hmmpph.

All so very true, except for the tables part. :P

That just about sums up my day :-) Throw in a non-flexible-what-so-ever CMS and you got yorself a long day ahead of you :-)

Yes I do! As somone who does web design that pie chart really sums it up.

I honestly don’t see what all the fuss is about. I have never had a problem getting my website to work in IE. The only thing I can’t get to work in IE is setting the opacity of my images in CSS, but that’s because It’s CSS3, which isn’t even officially usable yet.

Great pie chart, i even had to resort to a seperate stylesheet for IE once… havent done too much lately though other than small projects, i couldnt care less about how they look in IE as i have about 10-20 users

LOL! So true. Kidding aside, I figure I have to add on 25% of my time in theme deployment just to accommodate the quirks of IE. Yeah, sure, it can be done, London Dude, but really, it’s a sap on productivity to jump through hack hoops to appease IE.

And having to 86 transparent PNGs is a huge bummer, too. (Sorry, but the various kludgey fixes out there don’t quite do it, now do they?)

Where time is spent in web design…

The following graph explains where time is spent when designing web sites. This is not too far off from reality.

I really hate IE6, I think this is very accurate about the time spent, getting your site to work in it.

nice chart! it`s almost true but clients dont`t care about it…

I use safari ( i love it! ). I know there are sites for IE users to get screenshots of how their websites look in safari, but do us, safari users have a site to see how our websites look in IE? Because almost anything looks so crisp and clean in safari, but then when I log onto my windows computer, It looks like crap! Especially when you’re trying to pick a good default font for you site. Anyone know of a good site that does this? It would really help. E-mail me at livinthecolor(at)gmail.com if you do. Thanks!

    who cares?
you have to make it work for every browser on planet Earth!!
and not to forget the SEO matter ;-)
this is the one i’m suffering now

    ergophobe October 9th, 2006

He! And I thought it was just me! Since I don’t usually give up and use tables, I think the part on getting the CSS to work and then getting it to work in IE need to be expanded.

You’ve forgotten, however, the time spent procrastinating after your search for “float problems in internet explorer” leads you to some interesting site about disastrous maritime voyages.

Very true. I design using Safari as a browser, then look at it in IE, and find half the code doesn’t work.

    ianaz May 18th, 2007

    True :D

    mario January 11th, 2008

let’s see safari is the least used browser, but let’s design on safari and bitch about making it work on IE. real smart. maybe there should be a slice about how about illogical designers waste their own time

    Rob February 11th, 2008

Mario – Safari is not the most used browser, but it’s far from the least. And those guys are not just bitching about it not working on IE, they’re bitching that IE does not accept the same standards that MOST of the other browsers operate on, including Safari. It’s just one example.
