How to get online with your PSP & a Netgear WPN802 (Version 1) Access Point

I have had a PSP for a while now and I have to say, it’s amazing. My favourite PSP game at the moment is of course GTA Liberty City Stories. The graphics, the story and also the missions are unbelievable for a handheld, even when compared to its PS2 counterpart. Anyway, I wanted to go online with my PSP for a while now. I wanted to download PSP specific stuff (like game goodies - WipeOut Pure has tons of them), but also to be able to check my e-mails and some websites spontaneously without having to turn on any of my PCs. So, I naturally tried to connect my PSP via my own Netgear WPN802 Access Point. But to my disappointment, I had to disable some of its security settings and other stuff, otherwise it would not connect, because the PSP didn’t support WPA. This has changed with the arrival of firmware 2.6, with other great features. The current firmware version btw. is 2.7. Being able to use WPA, I still had to disable 802.11g support and thus using 802.11b only mode. I didn’t wanna stick with this, since I have a laptop using the g standard and I occasionally stream videos to it, so going with 802.11b only was not an option. So I played with some of the settings avaible in the access point menu and it suddenly worked! The setting that seemed to cause problems was the “enable eXtended Range(XR) Feature”. Since I don’t have any devices using this, I disabled it and voilà! The whole thing worked perfectly, while still providing security and not broadcasting the SSID.

Should you still encounter problems with, drop me a comment or contact Netgear’s Support.

Here are 2 pics to show where exactly the settings are located at:

    Hi Jody
Well, I’m sorry, but you do need an access point to connect to. It doesn’t have to be yours though, so you can also connect to the internet via a public access point.

Shout it out!
